What is it about sitting still that is so exhausting? The Leadership Group and others returned from the National Leaders’ Conference, “Dangerous Dreamers”, barely able to put one foot in front of the other! But it was truly a thought-provoking and heart-enticing few days. The start of a new era for the Vineyard in the UK under the leadership of John & Debby Wright. In some ways nothing has changed and in other ways a lot has changed and there’s more change to come as we are encouraged to dream dangerously.
If you can create some space, I would recommend sitting down with a hot drink and some chocolate and having a watch/listen to some of the sessions from NLC. The absolute highlight for me was Greg Thomson’s three bible studies: “A name for the nameless”; “An answer for the doubter” and “A place for the excluded”. On the Tuesday evening John & Debby set out their vision and focus for the Vineyard in the coming years (the Next Chapter) and enthused us with an excitement for what could be. And on the Thursday evening Ele Mumford was inspirational in reminding us of some of our core values. If you lead a small group I would commend Ele’s talk to you as a very worthwhile way to spend a meeting. It is not up on the website yet but should be soon.
This week we see the launch night for our next Alpha course. Is there anyone you could take along for the evening? If not, we can all make a diary note to pray for Ben, Dave and Sue as they lead the evening.
Property in Headingley
As I explained on Sunday 17 January, we are planning to buy a property (or two) in Headingley this year. We will instruct agents to keep us informed of interesting opportunities. But please keep your eyes open and ears to the ground and if you hear of anything coming onto the market in the quarter of a mile around Headingley Methodist Church – please let us know!
We haven’t recruited to our staff team for several years now – for various reasons but mainly because we didn’t have enough money. Things have turned a corner in the last year and we have been preparing the ground to fund a new pastoral staff position. In particular we are hoping to appoint an Assistant Pastor who can (maybe amongst other responsibilities) oversee our amazing Vineyard Kids’ ministries. If you would like to know more, or if you know someone who may be interested, full information and application documents will be ready shortly via our Website, Facebook or Twitter feeds.
What are you going to do for Lent?
If you are looking for ways to mark Lent this year I would commend signing up to the Stewardship 40 Acts campaign. Over the last few years this has been a roaring success combining provocative thoughts and suggestions for 40 days of “giving back, doing good and living generously”. You can sign up here.
