A prayer for our nation
We’re in need of prayer, we need to pray, we need to get on our knees and petition our Father God for our nation.
Firstly: The British people are facing the biggest political decision for generations. The coming Referendum compares to other great watersheds in British history. As Christians we have that extra privilege and responsibility to pray into this, as well as ballot in this. It is our privilege and our duty to cast our vote but also to pray – asking for wisdom and for God’s hand to be on our decision-making. Here is a prayer you could use:
Secondly: In the aftermath of the appalling tragedy that was the gunning down of Jo Cox MP there should be additional urgency in our prayer. Of course we lift up Jo’s family and friends and colleagues to the Father but we also petition Him for peace. We pray against the plans of the enemy which are to cause not just verbal and emotional violence in our political discourse but also physical death and destruction.
O Lord, You are One who knows what it is to suffer loss by violence and pain with injustice. We ask you to reveal yourself in love and comfort to the those who knew Jo Cox. We also pray for Your protection on our peoples, that violence and abuse may be restrained behind a dam of your mercy. May we, Your called and empowered people, full of Your Holy Spirit, be the salt and light of Your Kingdom as we bring peace and grace.
